Next week (6): Meet at 10am / due: full installation documentation & formal rendition

Dear all,

Great work today! I am excited to see your projects come to life. As discussed in class today, for next week please have all your installation components ready for a sequential presentation. By sequential presentation I mean a set of printouts (storyboards, like Aaron had today) or slideshow that outlines every step of your narrative process (that is, your idea and its formal execution):

The aim here, again, is to visualize every step & component of the installation, I need to get the sense that I am "there", in that particular space & seeing your installation in actual media, the more you cover each angle the better (think of lighting situations, points of view, locations etc...Use photoshop to comp up your piece in the actual space, as discussed today). Bring actual media pieces, so, If you are workiung with video, bring the actual video piece etc.

Also, bring your equipment list & location proposal so we can begin that process as well (especially if you are installing at accd)

One last thing: I am assuming that those of you who were in class today are those who are pursuing this project, good news for us then; since its a small group we'll go back to our 10am time slot. Any objections / suggestions please let me know.

Questions welcome
thank you & have a great weekend

one other thing for james (guess you're in luck with the refrences today)

reference for figure scale (seeing yourself gigantic)

james: look at this / curious, we were just speaking about this today & this post appeared on my other CD4 class blog...enjoy for inspiration!

re-membering the core

this is a type centered project, so don't delegate type to a supporting role. You are building a spatial & responsive language ecology—character and behaviour driven—so the media you use (video, sound, sculpture etc) needs to in-form and shape that typographic ecology.

Next meeting: thursday feb 18th

Hi all,

Some good progress today, some stalling also. In continuation of our class dialogue today here's what I am looking for for our next session:
—IDEA: remember all the discussions we have had so far, these are not arbitrary but rather build a though thread, a set of relationships that culminate in a particular form. This being said, re-connect with that which moved you in the original texts (this is your content framework), reflect on the research you have already done (expanding that content into a personal point of view, particular to your perception) and move forward to execution (the physical manifestation of your point of view, your idea in-form). Don't look for a solution without immersing yourself in the question first. If you don't feel it, chances are we won't feel it either.

FOR NEXT WEEK:
— form studies (physical): I don't want to see any more research-centered work. It's time for you to decide upon an idea and execute form variations within that idea.
—this means gathering all the properties of your project and building formal relationships between them; meaning: if you are using video, then bring studies IN VIDEO format, if you are doing a site-specific installation then comp your proposal (project) onto the space (place) itself—you can use photoshop, sketchup etc—. Building relationships means (using the example above): how does the video complement my idea in relation to a site? How does this relate to the sound component? what dialogue do these properties establish with their environment (site)? etc...And further: What is that video like? eg: shot underwater, shot from a far away distance, shot up close etc....

—a full storyboard of your installation, in actual proposed site. I should be able to understand your idea by looking at your boards (all components studied formally (content properties and formal executions of this content in relationship with its environment) remember the word ecology, data. Go back to those definitions if you need to.
— I want to see no less than 3 formal studies per component (eg: in bianca's case: type shot in video up close through a milky glass, type shot underwater, type made of acrylic and then shot underwater etc..explore! explore!)

—also, I am unclear about who is in this course and who is not. We have had people showing up and then not showing up. I require commitment to your work, no more no less. If you are not serious about this course then I suggest you let me know so I can do a head count and move forward accordingly with the projects that do have that commitment.

any questions welcome
thank you
