DUE NEXT WEEK: 12 / IMPORTANT

hi all,

for next week please make sure you have your stuff up to par.
some of the work today still feels a bit raw and incomplete, get it going, there's only 2 crits left.

DUE:

INSTALLATION: 2 ITERATIONS
1— final installation piece in class (we will project / install in class & document—i.e. photograph it— for your catalogue
2— site-specific installation around school: make sure you pass your final piece and location by me PRIOR to installing at school. Get all permits etc.
I am at school mondays (A8) & tuesdays (A9) this is a good time for me to look over final details and for you to show me your test installations—on site— before the final one.

EMAIL ME IF YOU NEED SOMETHING, don't post here as I may not see it on time.

CATALOGUE / BOOK
—printed AND COMPLETE: aka, all content, FULL delineation of the installation (piece itself, location, ideation, process)
remember: the purpose of the book is to showcase the work (installation) and give an immersive view of your project, in addition to producing an archive of the ideation process as a whole,
—this includes:
------ artists statement: what the piece sets out to do (intent) and how it achieves this (media, scale, location, narrative, sequence etc)
------pictures (documentation) of the actual installation piece (screengrabs for example)
------pictures (documentation) of the actual installation piece on location (site -specific or model shots)
------ alternate media piece (with full description of purpose and functionality)

POSTERS:
— All posters should be the same size, BW only. BIg logo / iconic. Let's do 30" x 60" like Aaron had today

WEBSITE:
— use indexhibit or cargo or whatever works best for you, BUT site needs to be functional and include all content from catalogue (this is your primary portfolio piece and it should speak for itself, meaning, I should be able to understand what your project is about and see it in pictures as a sequential narrative that grabs me.

any questions welcome
thank you

about indexhibit

Hello everyone,
I am trying to figure out how to use indexhibit~ I have some questions for it.
If anyone knows how to do it, plz tell me.

That is my current situation

1) I have a domain name
2) I have host with dreamhost ( I paid $9 to have it for one year, but they don't provide the database.(mysql)~if i want to get mysql in dreamhost, I need to pay

monthly ($10.95/mo, $49.95 set up fee)
yearly ($9.95/mo, the $49.95 set up fee will be waived)
which is too expensive. Is there anyway to get mysql with lower price?)

3) I want to design with Indexhibit but I can't find where to install the software / sample

4) I don't know how to upload with syberduck

Thanks

Dominique

This message is for Bianca and Carolina.

Hello, I have been searching the projector for a lot of days. I asked the guys in Apple store to see if I can buy it and return it. The answer is NO. They said once I open it, the bulb will be used. That's why I can not return. Tow projectors are more than $1000. I might not be able to afford that.

To Bianca,

Could I borrow your projector for 1 hr( or less) tomorrow morning. Just to project the movie on the wall of the entrance wall and take the pictures.

To Carolina,

I went to the equipment room to borrow the project. They said they only check it out for instructor. Could you help me to borrow it tomorrow morning and I will return it as soon as passible once I take all the pictures.

Thank you very much ~~
See you tomorrow~~

MIDTERM PROJECTION

This message is for Bianca. Sorry, I thought I had your email info, but couldn't find it. I was wondering if I would be able to use your projector during class this Thursday (4/1)? If that's possible I would be in your debt . . . I'll buy you lunch.

Carolina, if you happen to see this message could you forward Bianca's email to me, just in case she doesn't read this. Thanks to all.

Due next week: March 18th

as discussed in class , see below for what's due next week:

LOGO: make small revisions / variations based on today's critique and the selected direction

INSTALLATIONS: continue refining your installations. Just wrote for permissions, so aim at having it done and in full glory by week 10 (expected week of install)
— document your piece as you test it, these images will be content for the book / website

ALTERNATE MEDIA PIECE: keep working on it: bring in a full representation of the concept in this new media. So for eg: iphone app, bring in a 'storyboard' that outlines the usage process, what happens when (aka: sequential design)

WEBSITE: www.indexhibit.org: get familiar with it. Use Dreamhost as host, they are great & friendly. The website's purpose is to showcase the project as a whole, a sort of documentation / representation of the project's concept and execution. Inlcude all media: installation pics, installation media (eg: video), alternate media (iphone app, online video, etc), book pics —once it's done and bound— & process: how you got there

BOOK:
—chose one format
— 5 spreads studying this one format's structure (aka: grid) through body copy, folios and chapter heds (3 main typologies)
— grid: system of information & sequence: main components: margin size, gutters, number of columns, number of rows
—body copy: place body copy on grid variations with other 2 typologies / one typeface and point size per design (egL: one layout is 4 columns, even margins, set in times 9/12——the other 5 columns, wider margins on top & bottom, set in helvtica 8/11 etc)

any questions welcome
look forward to your beautiful work next week!

The ink wash technique?

Can someone tell me again where to get the 'rice paper' material that allows me to water spray on it and then disappears in 10 seconds or so? The material that was recommended to me in class discussion last week?

I've also been having a hard time finding out more information about the technique of ink wash (or ink pattern) that traces the motion of finger. I think I am just not knowing the correct name for it. If anyone knows, that would be helpful. Thanks

sooo please please look at this site

because it is incredibly beautiful especially the interior design of the Godiva store!!!

http://wonder-wall.com/#project/en

and because i saw this as the top hit for how to write an artists statement (AND IT'S INCREDIBLY STUPID) i thought i would share how to "simmer the stew"... and the first sentence of the example statement says : Knitting is my key to the secret garden, my way down the rabbit hole, my looking glass. woooow.... so if you are bored and need a laugh check this out
<3

some of my inspiration

goes to show that ordinary objects making "noise" is definitely musical!
especially @ 1:23 ;)

Next week (6): Meet at 10am / due: full installation documentation & formal rendition

Dear all,

Great work today! I am excited to see your projects come to life. As discussed in class today, for next week please have all your installation components ready for a sequential presentation. By sequential presentation I mean a set of printouts (storyboards, like Aaron had today) or slideshow that outlines every step of your narrative process (that is, your idea and its formal execution):

The aim here, again, is to visualize every step & component of the installation, I need to get the sense that I am "there", in that particular space & seeing your installation in actual media, the more you cover each angle the better (think of lighting situations, points of view, locations etc...Use photoshop to comp up your piece in the actual space, as discussed today). Bring actual media pieces, so, If you are workiung with video, bring the actual video piece etc.

Also, bring your equipment list & location proposal so we can begin that process as well (especially if you are installing at accd)

One last thing: I am assuming that those of you who were in class today are those who are pursuing this project, good news for us then; since its a small group we'll go back to our 10am time slot. Any objections / suggestions please let me know.

Questions welcome
thank you & have a great weekend
c

one other thing for james (guess you're in luck with the refrences today)

reference for figure scale (seeing yourself gigantic)

james: look at this / curious, we were just speaking about this today & this post appeared on my other CD4 class blog...enjoy for inspiration!

Tomorrow, Feb 18th: 9am

dear all,

we are meeting at 9am tomorrow, please be on time and have your work ready for review then.
We are in week 5, so I expect your ideas & executions to be well thought out by now (as outlined in the previous post)

thank you & see you tomorrow

re-membering the core

this is a type centered project, so don't delegate type to a supporting role. You are building a spatial & responsive language ecology—character and behaviour driven—so the media you use (video, sound, sculpture etc) needs to in-form and shape that typographic ecology.

Next meeting: thursday feb 18th

Hi all,

Some good progress today, some stalling also. In continuation of our class dialogue today here's what I am looking for for our next session:
—IDEA: remember all the discussions we have had so far, these are not arbitrary but rather build a though thread, a set of relationships that culminate in a particular form. This being said, re-connect with that which moved you in the original texts (this is your content framework), reflect on the research you have already done (expanding that content into a personal point of view, particular to your perception) and move forward to execution (the physical manifestation of your point of view, your idea in-form). Don't look for a solution without immersing yourself in the question first. If you don't feel it, chances are we won't feel it either.

FOR NEXT WEEK:
— form studies (physical): I don't want to see any more research-centered work. It's time for you to decide upon an idea and execute form variations within that idea.
—this means gathering all the properties of your project and building formal relationships between them; meaning: if you are using video, then bring studies IN VIDEO format, if you are doing a site-specific installation then comp your proposal (project) onto the space (place) itself—you can use photoshop, sketchup etc—. Building relationships means (using the example above): how does the video complement my idea in relation to a site? How does this relate to the sound component? what dialogue do these properties establish with their environment (site)? etc...And further: What is that video like? eg: shot underwater, shot from a far away distance, shot up close etc....

—a full storyboard of your installation, in actual proposed site. I should be able to understand your idea by looking at your boards (all components studied formally (content properties and formal executions of this content in relationship with its environment) remember the word ecology, data. Go back to those definitions if you need to.
— I want to see no less than 3 formal studies per component (eg: in bianca's case: type shot in video up close through a milky glass, type shot underwater, type made of acrylic and then shot underwater etc..explore! explore!)

—also, I am unclear about who is in this course and who is not. We have had people showing up and then not showing up. I require commitment to your work, no more no less. If you are not serious about this course then I suggest you let me know so I can do a head count and move forward accordingly with the projects that do have that commitment.

any questions welcome
thank you

Welcome!

Dear all,

welcome to our online space. Let's use this platform to collaborate outside the classroom, share ideas, post links, works in progress, inspiration etc.
I will also use this space to post assignment specifics per week when needed.

I have a poll, please cast your votes here:
—this week there was confusion about when class began. I was under the impression everyone agreed on 10am. If you were there at 8am or were not sure please let me know (aside form dominique). This can only work if we all agree upon it, otherwise I will be held responsible.

thank you
